The Monarch butterfly, beloved by many and a North American icon, has now been listed as endangered.
According to a press release from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the butterfly is on the verge of extinction due to rising temperatures and the loss of the insect's natural environment.
According to one study, the Monarch butterfly population has declined by almost 70% in the last ten years.
"A specific set of the population in the Western United States has decreased by over 99.9 percent," IUCN added.
Dr. Sean T O'Brien, President, and CEO of Nature Serve stated that much work was required to protect the species.
Other butterflies and animals have become victims of climate change as additional holes in the Ozone layer have been discovered.
